Stewardship Volunteer
- Description:
Stewardship volunteers support the Natural Areas' mission by directly helping on outdoor stewardship projects and community science efforts that help manage, restore, and monitor our natural areas. You’ll receive requests to assist with a variety of hands on volunteer opportunities including: plantings, restoration work, target species monitoring, trail building and maintenance, trash cleanups, and more.
Impact
Stewardship volunteers help natural areas staff increase their capacity and perform more vital tasks in the same amount of time.
Training
- Task specific training provided on-site by Natural Areas' staff
- Natural Areas’ online orientation
- Opportunity to attend continuing education sessions in trail building, ecology, group management, etc.
Skills and Qualifications
- Lift up to 25 lbs and work in strenuous outdoor conditions
- Must be able to easily walk a mile over rough terrain
- Ages 18+
- Must have reliable transportation to work site.
Dress Code
- Volunteer t-shirt
- Closed toed shoes
- Proper safety equipment worn when required (safety glasses, gloves- all provided)

Since its inception, the Natural Areas Department has engaged volunteers on every level, from education to stewardship to leadership. Volunteers help extend outreach and strengthen community involvement. We believe that volunteers are one of our most valuable resources.
- Responsibilities & Activities:
- Use your skills as a trained stewardship volunteer to directly help on stewardship projects that help manage and restore our natural areas including planting, cleaning up litter, working on trails, pulling weeds, pruning, etc.
- Record your hours and impact through the City’s online system, Engage.
- Follow any and all safety guidelines and instructions given by Natural Areas Staff members.
- Time Commitment:
- Stewardship volunteers must commit to volunteer a total of 10 hours in a calendar year. Projects are scheduled throughout the year at a variety of times and days of the week and will be available for signup through Engage.
- Attend any required trainings for the assigned project.
