Restorative Justice

Description:

  • Increase community safety by addressing crime restoratively - strengthen community relationships, improve understanding, and work to prevent future harms.
  • Meet a victim’s needs through participating in a restorative process which centers their voice.
  • Contribute your skills and desire to learn with a thriving group of volunteers and staff.
Responsibilities & Activities:
  • Work in close collaboration with fellow volunteers to participate in restorative processes as a community representative.
  • Practice active listening and affective communication in sharing stories and experiences about the impacts of relevant harm(s).
  • Use a strengths-based approach with all participants and actively participate in generating ideas for repairing harm(s) in the restorative justice process.
  • Demonstrate equal support and empathy for all participants (show support for the victim, the offending youth, and their families).
  • Actively engage in our program’s culture of mentoring: give and receive feedback from participants, peers, and program staff.
  • Perform additional case-related tasks as request (changes based on specific program).
  • Provide program improvement input and assistance as needed.
  • Attend and participate in volunteer gatherings and skill development trainings; dedicate time and attention to maintain and increase your skill level.
Time Commitment:
  • New volunteers begin by participating in our RESTORE program – a 5-hour restorative program (bi-monthly on Saturdays) – twice, to gain experience before specializing into other programs.
    • RESTORE is a restorative model that uses impact panels and accountability circles to address the harms of shoplifting.
  • Evening restorative processes are Monday through Thursday between 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
  • Each restorative process is up to 4 hours including prep meeting and debrief.
  • Community members are expected to have a 30-minute preparation meeting with facilitators for each restorative process.
