Garden Volunteer

Description:

Join our inaugural group of garden volunteers helping to maintain and beautify the garden around Annie the Railroad Dog’s garden and the newly seeded detention basin at Transfort’s Downtown Transit Center. We welcome adult volunteers of all abilities, no horticultural experience necessary. Gloves, tools and water are provided. While no special skills are required, the role will require bending, kneeling, stooping and navigating uneven surfaces.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Previous gardening or horticultural experience is desired, but not required.
  • Adults only (18+) due to the location adjacent to busy streets and the transit center.

Interests:

  • Gardening
  • Working outside
  • Environment
  • History

Training offered: A kickoff training session will take place in late April to train volunteers on responsibilities and primary activities. Volunteers who join after the training session can be trained individually in the garden.

Responsibilities & Activities:

Through a 2025 Nature in the City grant, Transfort and Planning Services refreshed the garden around Annie the Railroad Dog’s historic grave. New irrigation was installed and the garden was planted with low-water-use pollinator species. The detention basin was re-seeded in the fall of 2025 and will need regular maintenance to allow the native plants and grasses to establish. The garden volunteers will help ensure these newly refreshed spaces function as designed and allow the plants to establish. This will benefit pollinators and the local community, serving as a naturalized space in the urban downtown corridor.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Garden maintenance including weeding, planting, and irrigation.
  2. General garden upkeep.
Time Commitment:

Volunteer days will be bi-weekly on Wednesday mornings from 7:00 am to 8:30am. Our volunteer season will run from late April through November.

Volunteer Benefits:
  • Learn about native plants, gardening, pollinators and irrigation while connecting with like minded community members
  • Opportunity to work with dedicated staff and volunteers
  • Opportunity to help maintain the garden around Annie the Railroad Dog’s grave for future generations to enjoy
  • Help beautify Fort Collins
Location:

Transfort Downtown Transit Center: 250 N Mason Street Fort Collins, 80524

Annie’s Grave Garden is located along N Mason Street near the “bus only” entrance. The detention basin is located at the corner of N Mason Street and Maple Street.
