Open Streets Volunteer Team

Events
The 2024 Fall Open Streets event will take place on Sunday, September 15th. The event route will be along Shields Street, from Mountain Ave. south to Lake St. We are so excited to have your support as we turn an entire mile of street into a nonmotorized space of exploration, community, and fun! If this is your first exposure to Open Streets, the goals of the event are to: • Highlight walkable and bikeable routes by creating temporary, car-free streets for the community walk, roll, and bike along. • Encourage future active transportation among participants along Open Streets routes after the event concludes. • Feature local businesses and organizations that support active transportation, health, wellness, and community well-being. Create opportunities to connect participants with these organizations. • Foster social capital by connecting neighbors with one another during the event and beyond. Lunch will be provided to all volunteers! : ) Here is a run-down of the volunteer needs: Volunteer shifts run a little less than 3 hours. The schedule allows for a brief overlap in order to assure all positions are covered. Please keep in mind that you are welcome to sign up for more than one shift. Notable changes to this year's event: - We will have have ZERO cars on the route during the event (10 AM - 3 PM). This will be a FULL STREET CLOSURE. Vendors will be able to access the route between 9 AM-9:30 AM, and 3 PM-3:30 PM for load-in, load-out only. - No more hubs! Vendors and activities will be spread out continuously along the event route, eliminating the gaps that we used to have. - We're reducing the number of major shifts from 3 to 2. This reduces transitions and the number of volunteers needed. - There is one break in the route at Mulberry. This intersection will be managed by Fort Collins Police Services, but please assist in making people aware of traffic on Mulberry. Volunteer positions and descriptions are as follows: Fun and Safety Facilitators/Open Street Volunteers These volunteers will each be stationed near the closed intersections to the Open Streets route. Feel free to wander around near your station or bring a chair and sit in nearby shade. Have an eye for cars approaching the route and be there to assist in rerouting assistance. Information Station Volunteers These volunteers will be stationed at each of the 6 Information Stations spread evenly across the length of the event. The stations will have maps of the entire event route, an event schedule (includes a list of music, activities, and vendors), a water refill station, and first aid supplies. What to expect This is an outdoor event. Volunteers should dress for the weather and be prepared to be outdoors for their entire shift. Please bring a water bottle, sunscreen, a hat, layers of clothing that you can take on or off for comfort, comfortable shoes, and an extra snack. We will provide lunch and some light snacks for all volunteers and will send out a sign-up for lunch orders once we have your registration confirmed. Please be prepared to be on your feet for the majority of your shift, and be prepared for all types of weather. Some shifts may require a bit of walking. We encourage you to show up via an active mode (walking, biking, scootering) if you can. If you have any physical restrictions that you would like to discuss, please email Amy Gage at [email protected] and we will accommodate you.
