Community Mediation


Description:

Our wide range of community mediation-based services are available to all Fort Collins residents and City employees. Typical mediation cases include a variety of neighborhood and neighbor disputes, eviction mediation, landlord/tenant issues, facilitated conversation (larger group process), restorative mediations, Municipal Court-referred misdemeanor tickets, and internal City of Fort Collins workplace mediations. 

Responsibilities & Activities:
  • Co-mediate with fellow volunteers using a facilitative, strength-based approach.
  • Contact parties prior to mediation session to help them prepare.
  • Write specific and actionable mediation agreements based on the needs of parties.
  • Perform additional case management and program-related tasks as requested.
  • Provide program improvement input and assistance as needed.
  • Attend and participate in volunteer gatherings and skill development trainings; dedicate time and attention to maintain and increase your skill level.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence to effectively interact, work, and develop meaningful relationships with people of diverse identities, perspectives, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong learning orientation. Leverages all resources and is creative in ways of learning for self to continue adapting to changing issues and trends.
  • A desire and ability to understand the diverse needs of internal and external customers, and to create experiences and deliver services that exceed their expectations.
  • Strong learning mindset and curiosity

Time Commitment:
  • Daytime sessions are Monday through Thursday between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Evening sessions are Monday through Thursday between 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
  • Each mediation session is up to 3 hours including pre conversations and debrief.
  • Co-mediators are expected to have a 30-minute relationship building conversation in preparation for a mediation.

Licenses, Certifications, and Safety:
  • Completion of 40-hour Mediation Training Certificate.
  • A criminal background check is required.
