Bald eagles from the north make Fort Collins their winter home. They spend nights in communal roosts in cottonwood trees near the reservoir. Volunteer Master Naturalists are stationed at the viewing pier and explain the eagles’ natural history and help visitors view them through spotting scopes and binoculars. Eagle Watch Programs require a short walk along a paved trail to a viewing pier. Please note that the viewing pier is open year round but Cattail Flats Trail is closed in the winter to prevent disturbance to these birds. Occasionally, viewing scopes will be set up near the parking lot. Drop in any time during these programs. They are free and no registration is required, but if you sign up here you'll receive email reminders and notices of cancellations. If temperatures are below freezing, or it’s windy or foggy, the Eagle Watches may be canceled. Be sure to visit www.fcgov.com/naturalareas for weather cancellations and updates before you go.
Registration is not required for this activity, but by clicking "sign up" you will receive a reminder and updates about this program.
Thank you Fort Collins and Larimer County voters! Your support of citizen-initiated sales taxes makes land conservation and educational activities like this possible.

CancelI am a Public Engagement Specialist with the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas and I organize community programs, programs by request and interpretive communications like signs and brochures. I'm excited to be back in Fort Collins again after being gone for 15 years. My favorite things to talk about are conservation issues, conservation research and raptors!! The black blur in the profile photo is my cattle dog. She never stops moving!
I moved to Fort Collins in 1999, and retired in 2016 after 31 years as a wildlife ecologist with the USDA National Wildlife Research Center. I enjoy traveling, golfing, skiing, hiking and watching wildlife, especially birds.
I am a retired teacher having left after 38 years teaching in NW Indiana. My wife and I cmoved here summer of 2017. I've always enjoyed being in natural environments and have a strong desire to take care of them. I love hiking and learning new things. I see natural environments and our connections to them as essential to our well being as people and communities. All that makes us fully human, I believe, finds its richest expression when we connect regularly to natural areas
