Stewardship Project

Thank you for signing up to help with a National Public Lands Day Project hosted by the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas. This project seeks to engage the community in the repair of publicly accessible trails through the realignment of an existing trail that does not meet sustainability standards and continues to suffer the effects of erosion. Volunteers will learn trail design, construction, and maintenance techniques that aid in and provide quality visitor experiences along public trails. Lunch, volunteer gifts, and a chance to win fabulous prizes will be available to those who stay for the duration of this event! Here are some important things to know before signing up: 1) This event is for community members ages 13+ and no dogs are allowed at this event. 2) All participants must sign up through this link and will be prompted to sign a waiver (yay for less paper at the event!) 3) Meeting and sign-in location will be at Skyline Picnic Area at 614-624 N Co Rd 23, Fort Collins, CO 80521. Signage will be provided to direct participants. 4) Hiking of approximately 1/2 mile in each direction will be required carrying trail hand tools and supplies for the day. 5) We will be working on a roughly half mile section of new trail that has been re-routed off an existing trail which does not meet sustainability standards. The realignment has been chemically established and just needs some finishing touches. The trail work will involve cutting in some backslope using pick mattocks and McLeods, raking away vegetation, removing loose rock, as well as constructing some rock features. We will also have volunteers hike in and construct a few sections of buck-n-rail style fencing to close off the old trail once we have the new trail finished and open. Volunteers will be given an important safety talk and split into groups before hitting the trail. Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking and heavy use at this area. Snacks and water jugs (for refills) will be provided. Please bring your own water container, warm/layered clothing, close-toed footwear adequate for a dirt path, and any other items for a morning of comfort outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Please reach out to Rachel Balduzzi with any questions (970) 577-1568 or [email protected].
