Where: Coyote Ridge Natural Area, meet in the parking lot. When: Saturday January 18th, 9:30a.m. - 11:30a.m. Program Description: Prairie Dog Survival in Winter. Prairie Dogs are a unique animal that is adapted to surviving our harsh short grass prairie environment How do they survive the winter with no growing plants, plenty of predators and harsh weather? We will hike through a prairie dog colony as we explore how these fascinating creatures not only survive but thrive in the winter. The hike continues up a moderate slope to the cabin 1.1 miles from the trailhead. There we will rest, discuss prairie dogs and enjoy the beauty of nature. There is a restroom near the cabin. On our return hike to the trailhead we will again observe our prairie dogs, talk and take photos. Accessibility: Program includes walking out and back, roughly 2 miles on a wide, flat, dirt road with one big hill each way. No shade. Restroom not at trailhead, but 1 mile down the trail. Bill W - Volunteer Naturalist
I have been a volunteer naturalist since early 2023. My special interests include prairie dogs, photographing people in nature, diversity and access. My wife Barbara and I moved to Fort Collins in 2019 from Dallas. My volunteer work in Texas included service as a Texas Master Naturalist, 15 years as a Boy Scout leader and numerous medical projects as a physician. We come from Canada originally but moved often as a Service brat and later serving as a medical officer. We have 4 dogs.
