Stewardship Project - 12 +
Thank you for signing up to help with a National Trails Day Volunteer Project. This year's project will be an opportunity for volunteers to pick from a variety of trail and maintenance projects. We have three main projects. Transportation from the Northside Aztlan Center is available. E-mail [email protected] if you need transportation. Volunteers will meet at the Dixon Reservoir parking lot on the west side of Pineridge Natural Area. The three main projects are: 1. Vegetation Management – Beginner Level – Individuals will take pruners and hand saws to cut back tree limbs, and open up vegetation that has overgrown segments of the trail. These individuals will get to walk the entire length of the trail and open up sight lines and hanging branches that can interfere with equestrian passage (10-12 feet high). Volunteers need to be able to walk 2 miles each way from the parking lot to the end of the trail and back. This project will need 4 volunteers. 2. Tread Finishing – Beginner/Intermediate - Individuals will utilize hand tools to finalize tread surface by finalizing backslope/out slope grades while wheel barrowing trail mix to cap the tread and work to compact the surface with hand tamps. Volunteers need to be able to physically operate swinging hand tools, move loaded wheelbarrows, and compact tread with tamping tools. Will need to be able to walk 1-2 miles round trip. This project will need 16-24 volunteers, working in smaller groups of 4-6 people. 3. Boardwalk Finalization – Intermediate - Individuals will work to finalize the construction of 2 boardwalk decking projects. Individuals will anchor into the stringers that TVA staff have set and complete the final decking of the project. Individuals will run power tools. Upon completion, individuals will work with vegetation around the boardwalks to naturalize the site. Volunteers need to be comfortable operating power tools and will need to be able to walk up to 1.5 miles on uneven terrain. This project will need 4 volunteers. Lunch, volunteer gifts, and a chance to win fabulous prizes will be available to those who stay for the duration of this event! Here are some important things to know before signing up: 1) This event is for community members ages 12+ and no dogs are allowed at this event. 2) All participants must sign up through this link and will be prompted to sign a waiver (yay for less paper at the event!) 3) Meeting and sign-in location will be at the Dixon Reservoir Parking lot of Pineridge Natural Area. Signage will be provided to direct participants. 4) Registration will open at 8:30am with stewardship activity beginning around 9am. 4) Bring water and sun protection. Wear long pants and durable shoes. Gloves and any necessary tools will be provided. Volunteers will be given an important safety talk and split into groups before hitting the trail. Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking at this area. E-mail Rachel at [email protected] if you require transportation and would like to reserve a seat on the bus. Snacks and water jugs (for refills) will be provided. Please bring your own water container, warm/layered clothing, close-toed footwear adequate for a dirt path, and any other items for a morning of comfort outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
