Natural Discoveries (Community Program)
When: Saturday February 7, 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Where: Running Deer Natural Area. Meet at parking lot on east Prospect Rd (at approximately 3301 Prospect Rd). Other parking lots can be found at the Colorado Welcome Center (3745 Prospect Rd.), or running Deer Natural Area can also be accessed via the Prospect Rd underpass from Riverbend Ponds Natural Area. Activity Description: Learn about the different ways that animals survive through the winter's scarcity of food; migrate, hibernate, or staying active. Naturalist Rob Pickett shares some of the fascinating methods animals have evolved to stay alive. The hike will be about 3 miles long over relatively flat terrain. Accessibility: Program takes place outside and along an unpaved trail. Accessible bathrooms and parking available. Hike is roughly 3 miles, moderate. Please dress warmly for the weather. People of all abilities and disabilities are welcome to participate in all programs and we are happy to make any appropriate accommodations. After graduating in the first class of Environmental Sciences at U. of Virginia (1974), worked For EPA for ten years writing Environmental Impact Statements and being the Regional coordinator for Endangered and Threatened Species. The next 20 years, was the greenhouse and gardener supervisor at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Since 1986, has led monthly natural history hikes primarily in the Shenandoah National Park. Moved to Fort Collins in 2019 and lead hikes for the city and county.
