Budding Young Naturalists - Mixed Ages

Where: Coyote Ridge, meet in the parking lot When: Saturday May 18, 9:00a.m. - 11:30a.m. Program Description: Each living thing has a place on our earth where it can live and thrive. This is it's Niche. We will explore how animals and plants adapt to their environment to find a niche in which to thrive. We will hike across the prairie up a gentle slope into the first hills of the Rocky Mountains to the cabin 1.1 miles up the trail. On the way we will explore the niches of prairie dogs, the endangered Bell's Twinpod flower and a bush Mountain Mahogany. If time permits we will hike 1/3 miles further to explore an area where Mule Deer live. We will see if we can discover other nature's niches as we hike. We will stop to rest at the cabin where the is a restroom. We will wrap up our exploration at the cabin before hiking back. This program has been designed for youth ages 7-16 and their families, but all are welcome! Accessibility: Program includes walking out and back, about 2.2 miles on a wide, flat, dirt road with one big hill each way. No shade. Restroom not at trailhead, but 1 mile down the trail. What to Bring: Dress appropriately for the weather forecast. Bring multiple layers for both active walking and standing still. Bring sunscreen, a hat / sunglasses, closed-toe, sturdy shoes, and plenty of water. Trails may be muddy so please wear proper footwear. Hiking poles are a great option if you are concerned about balance on uneven/muddy terrain. ___________________________________________________________________ People of all abilities and disabilities are welcome to participate in all programs and we are happy to make any appropriate accommodations. Bill W - Volunteer Naturalist

Bill was born in Canada where he met his wife Barbara, earned his MD, had 2 sons, served in the Canadian Armed Forces and settled into practicing Family Medicine. He and family then moved to Dallas Texas where they stayed for over 3 decades before settling in Fort Collins in 2019. In the past Bill enjoyed being a Boy Scout leader for 15 years, running camping and canoeing. He has been a Texas Master Naturalist. Bill is happy to be a Volunteer Naturalist for the City of Fort Collins.
